Who are the Freemasons and how do they relate to the Shiners? The act of asking to join is an important first step that must be taken freely. In order to become a Shriner you first must be a Freemason, and our fraternity discourages solicitation of new members. No, indeed the opposite is true – you need to ask. The first thing to realize is that all Shriners are Freemasons, and in order to be a Mohammed Shriner you must be a 3rd Degree Freemason in good standing with a lodge recognized by the Grand Lodge of I llinois. You must be an adult, of 18 years of age. You must believe in God, but the interpretation and manner of worship is left to each individual to decide. Those who would like to help the less fortunate, and those who want to create bonds of brotherhood and friendship with like minded men.
